German Exporters Turn to Alternative Routes Amid Shipping Disruptions

(MENAFN) German exporters seeking access to Gulf markets are increasingly exploring alternative overland routes, including through Syria and Türkiye, as ongoing disruptions in maritime shipping caused by the Iran conflict continue to raise freight and insurance costs, according to reports.

Hans-Ulrich Dicke, a project manager at logistics company Derda, said the conflict has significantly disrupted trade flows in the region, forcing companies to rapidly adapt their supply chains.

“Iran war is, of course, hampering all business with the Middle East. The container ships cannot cross the Strait of Hormuz anymore, so we're seeking alternative solutions on a daily basis,” he told a media outlet.

He explained that when the conflict began, logistics operators initially shifted shipments to the Port of Fujairah on the UAE’s eastern coast to avoid passage through the Strait of Hormuz. However, he said this route is now becoming increasingly congested.

Dicke also noted that an alternative through Jeddah was considered but ultimately rejected due to costs that were reportedly four times higher than usual.

He added that air freight has not been a viable solution for many exporters due to high expenses, pushing logistics firms to search for more practical emergency routes.

As a result, he said companies are now exploring the possibility of transporting goods overland through Syria and onward to Gulf countries via Türkiye as part of efforts to maintain trade continuity.
