Big Bend National Park Announces New Mexico Songwriter & Sound Artist as 2016 Artist in Residence

Russell James Pyle on Tour

The Artist is also is performing on a mini-tour in the region and Austin

“The people who have resided on both sides of the river for generations are desert angels who’ve made a place that is seemingly inhabitable completely the opposite. I want to know how.

— NPAF Artist Russell James Pyle

AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA, November 15, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ — BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, TEXAS — The Big Bend National Park of the National Park Service, in cooperation with the non-profit National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) and the Big Bend Natural History Association announced today that Russell James Pyle, a musician & songwriter based in Albuquerque, NM, will be one of the park’s two November 2016 residents. Pyle’s residency is sponsored directly by the park at Big Bend.

Russell James Pyle was born and raised in the Lancaster, PA, area but also spent much time in his youth in Virginia, both in Richmond and in the Shenandoah Valley. Russell was educated at Eastern Mennonnite University, in Harrisonburg, VA, Webster University, in St. Louis, MO and the University of New Mexico. He moved to New Mexico ten years ago, drawn to the powerful open spaces of the high desert landscape. As Pyle explains: “The desert is the single most influential landscape in my music at the current time. I think there is metaphor sprinkled throughout, but the one that sticks in my craw is struggle. We all have to struggle to survive, and nothing knows that more than life in the desert.” Pyle comes to his art practice from a pretty unusual background in counseling and specifically in the relatively new field of Eco-Psychology. Though still certified as a counselor in NM, Pyle started working full time years ago as a troubador, songwriter, and musician in one of Albuquerque’s most popular original folk bands, The Porter Draw. He is currently working as a solo artist.

Pyle is looking forward to living, playing and creating music in the vast ambience of the park. he has often been and played in the Terlingua area and he has always felt the pull of the isolated big bend and Rio Grande country: “The people who have resided on both sides of the river for generations are desert angels who’ve made a place that is seemingly inhabitable completely the opposite. I want to know how. I want to know if the desert has affected them in the way it affects me and gives them the strength to keep going.” says Pyle. He believes that this is a perfect opportunity to use the natural sounds found in the park as part of a sonic palette to make experimental sound art that combines his human musicality with the power of the healing sounds of nature in dialogue with itself. Says Pyle: “I am currently fascinated by ambient music of all kinds. I am soaking up classic ambient works by composers as popular as Brian Eno and as obscure as Harold Budd. I’m incredibly excited by the idea that tones can both represent and invoke emotional states even if they are not in a traditionally melodic arrangement. I’ve done a bit of work with combining this element to traditional songwriting, and I am excited to dive further into these soundscapes.”

While at the park he plans to engage with visitors both informally and in performance venues. He has set up a micro-tour in the big bend and hill country area which will kick off during his residency at the park. Pyle will perform Two 7:30 PM shows Friday, November 25 at Rio Grande Village Amphitheater and Saturday, November 26 at Chisos Basin Amphitheater. Russell describes his plan for the performance and lecture as a way to integrate his passion for music with his experience in the field of ecopsychology, and hopefully to encourage dialogue with the public about their experience of the Park. “My program will be a mix of me playing songs with an ecology bent and then me talking to the audience about ecopsychology, or how we can maintain positive mental health by interaction with the natural world. It will be a family friendly event and I hope to have a discussion with the audience about how nature, and Big Bend in particular, affects the way they think about themselves and the world, and how this can translate into conservation efforts on an individual level.”

The tour kicks off towards the beginning of the residency, and the dates and venues are as follows:

11/2: High Sierra, Terlingua TX 7pm
11/13: High Sierra, Terlingua TX 7pm
11/18: Starlight Theater, Terlingua TX 7pm
11/20: Hole in the Wall, Austin TX, 8pm

The Park Service is very excited to host a pair of artist residents this November. The November residency this year is shared between Pyle, a musician and ecopsychologist, and Nicholas Collier, who will be NPAF’s Big Bend’s first U.S. Veterans in the Arts Artist-in-Residence sponsored by the Big Bend Natural History Association. As the Park’s Superintendent, Cindy Ott-Jones, explains “As the National Park Service celebrates our Centennial year in 2016, we look forward in our approach to serving park visitors, while remembering our heritage of service.” Programs like Big Bend’s residency add value dynamically to the Park experience for visitors now and in the future and represent the highest aspirations of the Park Service’s goals for the next century.

NPAF is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to the promotion of the National Parks of the U.S. through creating dynamic opportunities for artworks that are based in our natural and historic heritage. This project is supported by the Big Bend National Park Projects Budget, the National Endowment for the Arts, Big Bend Natural History Association, and other generous benefactors. Big Bend National Park Announces first U.S. Veteran-Artist Nick Collier as 2016 Artist in Residence

Serviceman Portraits by Nick Collier

National Parks Arts Foundation begins nationwide Veterans-in-the-Arts Program

There really isn’t anything like driving by yourself in a hostile country in the middle of the night down a dirt road. But one of the funny things about it was that I never felt in danger…

— Nicholas Collier, Veteran Arts Resident at Big Bend

EL PASO, TEXAS, USA, November 15, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ — BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, TEXAS — It is 2004, Eastern Afghanistan. A young marine is driving on dark roads to pick up and deliver sniper teams into hostile mountain territory. “So, on my birthday that year I was driving an Army sniper team. A rusty, diesel, right-hand drive, manual transmission Toyota Hilux (a Toyota Tacoma) with a tape deck and a horrible suspension. There really isn’t anything like driving by yourself in a hostile country in the middle of the night down a dirt road. But one of the funny things about it was that I never felt in danger, although I would have been dead if I had been stopped or ambushed. It actually made me feel like I was at home and not in a war. Like I was just out running dirt roads in my truck. I can still recall it, to this day. Life changing.” That surreal and radiant intensity beneath underlying experience is something that every artist seeks out and hopes to catch in their work.

That marine, Nicholas Collier, is now the first NPAF Veteran Artist in Residence at Big Bend National Park. After leaving the Marines, Collier received his BFA from George Mason University, Virginia, in 2012 and his MFA Florida State University in 2016, and will be the Park’s First-Ever U.S. Veteran Artist in Residence for the month of November 2016. Collier’s residency is sponsored by the Big Bend Natural History Association, and will be one of two featured residencies at Big Bend. There are thousands of veterans who are also artists and the National Parks Arts Foundation is piloting this program to connect them to the incredible limitless sources of inspiration available at parks such as Big Bend.

But Collier’s path to the artist’s vocation might have been true but it wasn’t exactly straight: “I wasn't really the typical art kid because I was also an athlete and played sports year-round. After I graduated high school I went off to college to initially pursue a graphic design degree. It seemed at first to be a very practical degree that still kept me in the art world. 2.5 years in I decided to put it on hold and join the military.” says Collier. After leaving the Marines, he was on track to finish his original degree, but never that drawn to design, he was pulled instead towards the studio arts program. From that point on, fine arts has been his life.

Though he describes his basic artistic appoach as multi-disciplinary, having long worked in a variety of sculptural practices, he has turned to portrait and landcape photography. Collier’s portraits are a fascinating mix of the documentary and the creative power of the photograph. “I’m currently working with a photographic process that involves an Afghan Box Camera that I built a few years ago. The landscape format is a departure from the first and primary use of the camera, that of portraits. I’m really interested in the physicality of the process with the camera and the challenges it creates.” Collier will also do some developing in the field, using the same box camera as a portable photo studio, as he recently did in trekking the mountains of Colorado.

Collier will also produce an art show for visitors at the park, on November 25th, 2016 at 2 pm, followed by a presentation and lecture at 7:30 pm both at the Panther Junction Community Room. Says Collier: “More than likely this will be a show of photographs but I wouldn’t write off having the inclusion of a sculpture or two. My first love is working three-dimensionally.” The ideas are sure to strike in the unique atmosphere of the Big Bend, and that is just fine with Nick Collier. “A successful residency is one that inspires and creates growth. It’s about a response to a time, place, and situation. A circular cycle completed.”

The Park Service is very excited to host these two artist residents this November. The November residency this year is shared by Collier, and Songwriter and Ecopsychologist Russell James Pyle.

Big Bend National Park, founded in 1944, is a United States National Park located in the U.S. State of Texas on the United States-Mexico border at the most dramatic meanders of the Rio Bravo/Rio Grande. The park covers 800,000 acres and comprises river canyons, Chihuahuan desert vistas, old mine buildings and other structures, and stunning rock formations and varied, multicolored geology. The Park is also a world biosphere reserve and is one of the few national parks in the country Gold Tier certified for Dark Sky Stargazing. 2014’s Artist-in-Residence, Pulitzer nominated playwright, screenwriter and photographer, Howard Korder (Boys Life, Boardwalk Empire) used the park’s unique space-time and the solitude afforded by the residency to multitask, taking photographs and develop ideas for a television series.

Songwriter & Photographer Couple are November’s NPAF Gettysburg Military Park Artists-in-Residence

Couple are residents at Gettysburg National Military Park, thanks to the National Parks Arts Foundation

As a songwriter, I want to attempt to tell some of those stories, to give a voice to some of the people on both sides who were affected by the battle and aftermath.

— Michela Ferree, NPAF Resident for November

GETTYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, USA, November 15, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ — GETTYSBURG, PA — Gettysburg National Military Park’s Artists-in-Residence for the month of November will be singer and songwriter, and author Michela Miller Ferree and her husband George, a photographer and video artist.

Michela and George Ferree will spend mid-November through mid-December at the park, working and interacting with Gettysburg visitors. Michela has experience as a music teacher as well as an environmental educator at the Cincinnati Zoo, so she enjoys public interaction. The Ferrees will meet with park visitors on December 10 in the Refreshment Saloon at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, for a fireside performance of songs inspired by the Civil War. The free program will be from 1 to 2 p.m.

Michela will be writing songs about the human stories inspired by the hallowed ground of Gettysburg. “Gettysburg is full of thousands of stories. As a songwriter, I want to attempt to tell some of those stories, to give a voice to some of the people on both sides who were affected by the battle and aftermath. There are so many themes to choose from when thinking about creating songs. Leaving home, brother against brother, loss, hope, unity, divisiveness, giving up your life for a cause, realizing that you don't even know why you're fighting, young, poor men as pawns for old, rich men… it's endless. The stories already exist, I just have to find them and translate them into song.”

George plans to photograph a variety of the more than 1300 monuments to soldiers who fought on both sides of the battle, using the ultra-low light capability of his camera to catch time and starlight on the wing. “Storytelling and emotion are what I love about photography; video is composed of thousands of photos, each adding its own element to the emotion and story. In my photography, I want to tell stories at night.”

Michela grew up in neighboring Ohio, in President Grant’s hometown. In fact, her father often played the legendary union General at schools and other events. “He portrayed Grant, to whom he bore an uncanny resemblance. As a result of his participation, I had “forced” participation of my own. Imagine the horror of a 13-year-old girl when her teacher gets her dad to present a lecture to her seventh grade history class, dressed in Union blues. I spent all of Jr. High as ‘the general’s daughter’.”

But she also sang and performed in period costume at events where her family was often drafted into action. “Most of my family lives in my home town, and most of them are very musically gifted, so music has always been encouraged. I cut my musical teeth singing at churches and on stages in my hometown. My hometown gave me strong roots, and moving away was difficult, but I feel like I've blossomed by foraging out of my comfort zone.” Michela upped roots and headed to Fairbanks, Alaska, where she met her husband, and together they moved to Nashville, before setting in Seattle.

George, an Alaska native, has often been inspired by the amazing vistas and light of his native state, and is curious to use his spirit of wonder on the landscapes of the park at night. “I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. Alaska is a never ending flow of artistic inspiration. It was the northern lights that really struck a chord inside me; being able to capture a natural event of that caliber gave me fulfillment that no other medium of art ever had. Ultimately, seeing events and places through a viewfinder allows me a deeper connection with them.”

The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF), a 501(c)3 non-profit, is excited to continue and expand this program with the National Park Service at Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg Foundation to provide the Gettysburg National Military Park Artist-in-Residence program. This is the last residency program at Gettysburg National Military Park this year. In 2017, the NPAF residency program is growing to 12 AiRs in four categories: Electronic New Media, Word/Sound/Song, Open Media, and an innovative & brand new program for Artists who are Armed Forces Veterans.

The program is offered thanks to the input and support of the National Park Service and the Gettysburg Foundation whose joint efforts make the park the foremost visitor destination for those interested in the epic history of the American Civil War.

"Gettysburg’s monuments and memorials, and the battlefield landscapes inspire so much passion in our visitors today, and the Artists-in-Residence really highlight that passion," said Ed W. Clark, superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park. "The Artist-in-Residence programs are engaging new audiences and making deeper connections with our visitors through the power and the passion of art."

“The Artist-in-Residence program is a refreshing way to make the stories from Gettysburg's rich history come to life,” said Barbara Sardella, Interim President of the Gettysburg Foundation. “Integrating art into the Gettysburg experience is a long-term Foundation goal. At the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, we use the magnificent Cyclorama painting and our new Civil War Art Exhibit to depict the courageous soldiers and civilians, ordinary people, caught up in extraordinary situations. The talented artists of this program like Michela and George Ferree, who interact with our visitors and local residents create a spark when they offer a very different lens through which to view war, people, and the power of this place called Gettysburg."

Trump’s agenda to fight corruption is revealed, involving our youth rising up to drain the swamp.

Anonymous align with Donald to drain the swamp of corruption by stampeding the wealthy 1%. More will be revealed as we activate to get our jobs back.

The wealthy are desperate to keep us working class down, buy the media and claim Trump has no empathy for us working people. But … Donald knows Anonymous insists that he fulfill his election promise.

— Dr. Chris Tingle

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, November 15, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ — President-elect Donald Trump’s secret agenda to fight global corruption of the wealthy 1% is revealed, an agenda that involves the youth of the Globe rising up against the rigged system to drain the swamp.
Donald Trump naysayers were misguided to assume that Donald planned to drain the swamp merely by becoming President of the United States. Members of the Non Generation Movement (NGM) and Anonymous have now aligned with Donald to clean-up corruption by stampeding the traditional media and the wealthy 1% into exposing their biases by deploying devious practices to thwart the revolution… More will become revealed to We the People as we prepare for the post-election aftermath and activate to get our jobs back. Remember the million mask march?
As for Chris Tingle… She has published some of the proposed strategies of the Non Generation Movement and Anonymous designed to bring social justice to us blue collar working class people and disenfranchised poor, strategies that will disinherit the wealthy 1%.
Dr. Tingle also documents the manner by which the media vilify the words of Chris Tingle, Donald Trump, Anonymous, and all who oppose the establishment to demonstrate that the traditional media has serious bias problems that work against freedom of speech.
The wealthy opposition have proven to be ruthlessly desperate to keep us working people down by buying the media and claiming that Donald Trump has no empathy for the plight of us poor – is not one of us. But think again… Donald knows that we will not be placated and that he must fulfill his election promises.
And if Hillary was so smart, how come she got her lack of integrity exposed by a mere construction-kid from the Bronx like Donald?
And if Donald is so psychologically flawed, how come he knows how to inspire us working-class people to help him drain the swamp?
