Canadian Open Parkinson Network funding begins collaboration to accelerate Parkinson’s disease research and knowledge

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, November 27, 2018 / — Parkinson Canada together with Brain Canada are pleased to announce the creation of the Canadian Open Parkinson Network (C-OPN). The $2 million Platform Grant is intended to support the initial development and maintenance of a large-scale research network that is built on the foundation of the established and successful Quebec Parkinson Network (QPN), and involve multiple provinces, in the field of Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. Brain Canada receives financial support from Health Canada through the Canada Brain Research Fund.

Dr. Oury Monchi, PhD, has been appointed as Principal Investigator and Director of the C-OPN, which is a collaboration of the brightest minds in Parkinson’s research in Canada today. Dr. Monchi holds the Tourmaline Oil Chair in Parkinson’s disease, and is the Clinical Research Director at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, where he is also a professor in the Departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Radiology, Leader of the Movement Disorders Neuroteam and CaPRI, and Clinical Research Director at the Department of Clinical Neurosciences.

Rapidly Evolving Risk Landscape is a Growing Governance Challenge for Boards, Say Directors

Board members and other key executives from 13 countries have issued guidance on how to best govern risk via specialized board risk committees.

NORTHFIELD, MN, USA, November 27, 2018 / — As political and economic interactions become more complex, and as disruptive technologies and processes make innovation cycles massively shorter, boards of directors are paying more attention to risk. This week, the Directors and Chief Risk Officers group (“the DCRO”) published Guiding Principles for Board Risk Committees to help boards and those who depend on them enhance the risk governance practices of their organizations.

The guiding principles are based on the idea that all organizations must take risks to innovate and to achieve their goals. “Taking risk is in entrepreneurs’ DNA,” said Florence Anglès, Chief Risk Officer of REYL & Cie Ltd, an independent banking group in Switzerland. Getting the most out of an organization’s ability to take risk – its risk capacity – is enhanced by a board governance function that includes specialized focus on risk-taking. At the same time, boards have a duty of care that requires an appropriate framework be in place to ensure that such risk-taking is commensurate with their desired levels and expectations. "Having these guiding principles available is a great help to allow my organization make sure that the right oversight and infrastructure to measure and monitor risks at all stakeholder levels is in place,” said Maria Paula Calvo, Vice President Service and Global Technology and Operations Lead Mexico, for MetLife.

Within the guiding principles document is a tool for organizations to evaluate whether it is appropriate and therefore helpful for their board to establish and/or maintain a board risk committee providing the specialized skills and attention that good risk governance may require. “All directors are constantly evaluating risks to the corporation in all board and committee meetings,” noted Carol Gray, a board member at both IFM Investors Pty in Australia and Amex Bank of Canada. “However, with the appropriate forward-looking reporting metrics for a board risk committee to oversee the risk-taking activities of the corporation, all directors’ evaluations should be better informed with insight on management’s development and deployment of strategy from a return on risk perspective.”

According to Todd Davies, member of multiple boards in Australia, “the DCRO Guiding Principles for Board Risk Committees sets the aspirations and practices for a modern risk committee that is fit for purpose for the challenges and opportunities of our times.” He added that “many of today’s risk committees are often concerned with risk control and assurance – something that is important now as it always has been – but in a world of exponential complexity, uncertainty, and change, limiting risk’s focus on these domains is a recipe for opportunities missed and value destroyed.” The guiding principles note that one of the key functions of a board risk committee is to be forward-looking in its focus, linking the organization’s risk taking to the drivers of its success – something essential for value creation.

Board risk committees are prevalent among large banks in many countries, having been made a requirement by regulation following the financial crisis of 2007-09. But studies show that these governance committees are of growing importance across many industries and not just at large entities. “It is critically important that every organization understands the risks it faces and has developed an assessment of each of them,” noted Cyril Maybury, who chairs companies and audit and risk committees in Ireland. “The guiding principles document provides extremely useful guidance on the principles underlying the operation of board risk committees,” he continued. Gray, who also serves on the Board of Governors of Trent University in Canada, emphasized the guidelines’ applicability to non-financial entities as well, saying, “the DCRO Guiding Principles for Board Risk Committees provides me with an instructive document for the non-bank boards on which I serve to evaluate the merits of a board risk committee. Taking the learning from the financial sector into non-bank industries to develop fit-for-purpose risk committee mandates will complement the board’s responsibility for oversight on strategy and delivering results.”

"There is a breadth and depth of experience among our governance council members that allows the DCRO to put forward uniquely helpful guiding principles documents,” said David R. Koenig, the founder of the DCRO and chair of the DCRO Board Risk Committee Governance Council. “Our guiding principles documents are designed to be used day one by boards across many geographies and industries,” he added.

While some companies have either assigned the role of risk governance to an existing audit committee or have created hybrid audit and risk committees, these guiding principles note some cautions about those approaches. “The authors of the DCRO guiding principles envisage a role and focus that is complementary to but very different from the audit and risk committees that you might be familiar with, displacing and clarifying much of the existing thinking for those working in this space,” said Davies. “If you are responsible for leading or shaping board and committee activities at your organization, you’d be well-served by using this document.”

Further, it is also important to note that a board risk committee has a different function than the management of risks practiced by some company executives. They are connected, though, in an important manner. “Defining the right risk appetite aligned with a sustainable strategy is the ingredient of success and is done at the board level,” noted Anglès of REYL & Cie. “To reach this goal, every organization needs a risk champion within management, often a chief risk officer, with the support from the board and a dedicated committee composed of experts in order to oversee risk effectively.”

Risk Score-Guided Care Reduces Death Rate in Heart Failure Patients by Nearly 50 Percent, Study Finds

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, USA , November 26, 2018 / — New team-based care guided by a personalized risk score for heart failure patients reduced the mortality rate of high-risk heart failure patients by nearly 50 percent, according to new research from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City.

Risk-score guided care uses a precision medicine approach, which is based on team-based care activated by the personalized outcomes of a daily set of clinical risk scores. Researchers say it improves healthcare delivery by getting the right amount of care to the right patient at the right time and in the right way.

Researchers observed a 48 percent lower mortality rate and a 25 percent lower 30-day readmission rate when the risk score-guided pathway was used in high-risk heart failure patients admitted to Intermountain Healthcare hospitals.

The study of more than 6,100 patients found the multidisciplinary team care pathway allows physicians to provide the level of care heart failure patients need, based on their individualized medical information.

This improvement addresses a care improvement goal of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services called the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program, which was established by the Affordable Care Act.

“Using new and unique approaches that deliver healthcare to heart failure patients based on the best information we have for their individual needs improves patient outcomes,” said Benjamin Horne, PhD, researcher with the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute and lead author of the study. “Rather than providing standard treatment protocols to all patients, the study is helping us provide the necessary expanded level of care for patients who are at higher risk for hospital readmissions or death.”

Results of the study were presented earlier this month during the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Chicago.

During a nearly four-year period (Jan 2013–Nov 2016), 6,182 heart failure patients were admitted to one of 20 Intermountain Healthcare hospitals participating in the study. In February 2014, the new precision medicine approach was gradually implemented across eight of Intermountain Healthcare’s largest hospitals.

Beginning within 24 hours of a patient being admitted, a daily report was generated that provided multiple risk score calculations to clinicians. Patients at higher risk for 30-day readmission or death were directed to the pathway that outlined advanced levels of care from the multidisciplinary team.

“Other studies have shown that reducing hospital readmissions has led to higher mortality rates,” said Dr. Horne. “Our study showed that even though deaths were reduced, meaning more critically-ill patients with heart failure were still alive to potentially be readmitted to the hospital, we still saw the readmission rates decrease by 25 percent.”

Three of Intermountain’s largest hospitals, which were part of the study, have been repeatedly recognized among the 20 hospitals in the country with the lowest readmission rates for heart failure patients. The decreases seen as part of this study were in addition to the already low readmission rates observed over the past decade.

The study, in part, was supported by the Intermountain Foundry innovation program. The new program is part of Intermountain’s commitment to systematically identify and implement ideas that may improve healthcare regionally and nationally.

“Going forward, we’ll work to maintain the improvements we’ve made in 30-day readmission and mortality rates using this new model and look for additional ways to improve outcomes for heart failure patients,” said Dr. Horne.

Look at what weapons our brave firefighters go to fight fire with: one has a fire hose nozzle, the other has a shovel. Such a photograph could have been a fire back in 1826, but we live in the 21st century.

The newest technologies have penetrated into all spheres of our life, while our firefighters still risk their lives with a shovel and a water hose. I believe that every time firefighters are placed in these situations it is the result of someone’s irresponsibility, even criminal negligence… when there is another, safer, faster way.

As firefighters dig trenches with shovels and construction equipment exposing their lives to insane danger, and the support from the limited numbers of planes and helicopters often takes several hours to be available, the fires gain in size, intensity, destruction, and increase the threat to lives.

I think the dominant strategy for extinguishing wildfires today should be focused on using hydrogen capsules. Hydrogen capsules would take about 45 minutes to create a safety alley between a wall of fire and the houses of a city such as Paradise, and the lives of people and their property would be saved. With wildfires getting worse, it is well beyond time to upgrade the primary method of extinguishing these fires, for greater effectiveness, safely, and speed.

Scientists involved in environmental problems say that over the past 20 years the number of such disasters has increased 4 times! Apparently, the growth trend of wildfires will continue. This means that California, as well as other US states, are threatened with even more frequent and more powerful wildfires.

Now is the time, we must bring to the fight against this threat, the latest achievements of science to modernize our means of firefighting. Considering advances in nanotechnology, controlled explosions, and hydrogen capsules, allowing first to localize the fires, and then completely destroy them.

I had never seen such a site in Bay Area where the air quality index was Very Unhealthy air quality. Next day I saw the air quality index maps and learned that the air quality in Chico next to Paradise fire was over 500 and San Jose air quality is Very Unhealthy.

I begin to question myself why and “How can San Francisco be the most polluted city in the world.” I left home in New Delhi to move to USA for it is the best place to get education, find work, enjoy the quality of life where the air is clean and the environment is healthy for all. After seeing the smog in the area because of the fire in Chico, I concluded that any thing is possible this could be the affect of the climate change? Our president Donald Trump has come to California to visit the affected site with fire may be he will realize that climate change is not a hoax and may have a change of heart and revisit the Paris Agreement to join the rest of the countries.

This high air quality index is an eye opener for all of us who do not live in the third world countries or the cities in the world that are polluted most of the times. New Delhi’s air index after Diwali festival was over 500, which is Hazardous air quality in most of the places in and around Delhi. So we can now imagine what life is like for the people living where the air is so polluted and sky is always smoggy and you cannot see things clearly during the daylight.

Living consistently in such an environment can have an adverse affects on your health please consult with your doctor for precautions and how to avoid exposure to bad quality air. One of the recommendations is to stay indoors where the air quality is better then outside air mostly.

I have recently built a very Energy Efficient Home where I use fresh air form outside to provide clean air as the makeup air rather then using the recycled air all the time. To my surprise I got a call from Cathy Haire my HVAC consultant advising me to put a switch so we can turn off the dampers to hold off the fresh air if the quality of the air outside is verse than the indoor air quality. I immediately agreed to install a switch to take care of this situation in San Jose, California.

We spend most of our life in the buildings and homes. So it is very important that these places are built to provide clean air. We have made a lot of progress in the commercial buildings where we build LEED Certified buildings, which conserve more energy and use sustainable building practices and pay attention to the air quality for the occupants. But for the Residential homes it is left to the contractors and the city code, which requires basic air filtration and normal insulation.

I was in Paris when China the largest producer of emissions and USA the largest per capita emitter of emissions representing 40 percent of the global emissions formerly signed the Paris Agreement. As of today USA is not a part of the team. What President Barack Obama had accomplished President Trump got out of the treaty.

My curiosity to build the Energy Efficient Homes without using fossil fuel took me to a conference in Germany to learn about the Passive Homes from Dr. Wolfgang Feist. Now I build Passive Homes and I build them with the best air quality and energy conservation.
