Intermountain Healthcare First System in Nation to Remove the Needle from Blood Draws

Intermountain sets new clinical standard by reducing anxiety and risks for one of healthcare’s most common inpatient procedures

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, USA, July 26, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — As part of its commitment to transform healthcare by serving its patients with cutting-edge, high quality care, Intermountain Healthcare today announced that it is the first health system in the U.S. to embark on a commitment to provide more humane inpatient blood draws across its 22 hospitals. This bold move will establish a new national standard for patient and practitioner-centered care and quality.

Intermountain is adopting a needle free technology from San Francisco-based Velano Vascular called PIVO™. PIVO connects to an indwelling peripheral IV catheter, commonly used in hospitalized patients, and enables practitioners to extract blood from the vein. Following more than two years of clinical collaboration, the system will begin its rollout immediately.

“Blood draws are critical, common elements in modern medicine, but they cause an unnecessary amount of anxiety, pain and risk due to the use of century-old technology and practice,” said Kim Henrichsen, Intermountain senior vice president and chief nursing executive . “We are thrilled to offer a new standard of care that, over time, will help obviate the need for needles used for hospital blood collection. This commitment to standardizing draws will enhance quality for both patients and practitioners.”

Inpatient blood draws occur nearly 500 million times a year in the U.S. and inform more than 70% of all medical decisions. At the same time, 30% of the U.S. hospital patient population are considered Difficult Venous Access due to obesity, age and disease, making it even more challenging to collect blood samples.

“It is baffling that in an era of smartphones and space travel, clinicians draw blood by penetrating a vein with a needle – oftentimes in the early morning hours,” said Todd Dunn, director of Innovation in Intermountain’s Transformation Lab. “Through our Design for People program, we resolved to find a better way for our phlebotomists and nurses to more humanely and consistently draw blood. Following 15,000 PIVO draws on adults and children with no adverse events and overwhelmingly positive feedback from patients and caregivers alike, it is clear that we are together establishing a new standard of care.”

About Intermountain Healthcare

Intermountain Healthcare is a Utah-based not-for-profit system of 22 hospitals, 180 clinics, a Medical Group with about 1,500 employed physicians and advanced practitioners, a health plans group called SelectHealth, and other medical services. Travellers risk being caught out by failing to check travel insurance for adventure sports

Rock Climbing in Yosemite National Park, United States

The USA is a popular destination for rock climbers. It is also one of the most expensive countries for medical treatment.

Travellers may be exposing themselves to crippling overseas medical bills by engaging in adventure sports not covered by their travel insurance.

Travellers should always consider activities as part of their travel insurance selection process.”

— Antje Lauterbach

SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, July 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Over 50% of Aussie travellers go overseas without adequate insurance, according to research

A recent survey commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) and the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) shows that over 50% of Aussie travellers go overseas without adequate insurance. One of the key issues highlighted in the survey is the failure to insure for risky activities like adventure sports. Even among travellers who do take out insurance, only around half check their policy to make sure their planned holiday activities are covered.

Travellers failing to check their policies for adventure cover is a major concern, especially among young Australian travellers. The DFAT and ICA-commissioned survey shows that almost three quarters of Aussie travellers aged under 30 engage in risky activities while overseas. According to travel insurer Columbus Direct’s latest customer survey, over 50% of respondents between the ages of 18 and 49 are either actively planning an adventure holiday or have adventure travel on their bucket lists. 16% have already engaged in adventure sports while on holiday.

Unfortunately, travel insurance cover for adventure sports is not yet commonly available with many travel insurance policies. Of the 29 travel insurance brands listed on popular comparison site Finder.com.au, only five cover skydiving or outdoor rock climbing.

“Engaging in adventure sports on holiday significantly limits the range of travel insurance options available to Australian travellers” explains Antje Lauterbach, Columbus Direct’s Marketing Manager. “Those who engage in more than one adventure activity, or who have complex travel insurance needs, such as pre-existing medical conditions, can find it difficult to get suitable cover.”

Columbus Direct recently launched a new range of activity-related travel insurance products on the Australian and New Zealand markets. The products address the shortage of cover options for adventurous travellers and those looking to work or volunteer while on holiday.

The wide range of sports, adventure and work-related travel insurance options Columbus Direct has added to its travel insurance offering aims to make it easier for those with non-mainstream travel needs to find suitable cover. The expansion is notable for the addition of several activities that many travel insurers exclude from cover, including on-road motor biking over 250cc, outdoor rock climbing and sky diving (all subject to terms and conditions and payment of an additional premium), and for the fact that the new cover will be available in combination with comprehensive medical screening. This gives travellers with pre-existing medical conditions a better chance of obtaining cover for their particular needs.

Columbus Direct is already well established for the niche cover it provides to those with pre-existing medical conditions, pregnant travellers, non-citizens and one-way travellers. “We’re excited to add the new activities cover to our range of specialist travel insurance products” says Lauterbach. “We know that every trip is different, and we want our travel insurance products to reflect that”, she explains.

“Travellers should always consider activities as part of their travel insurance selection process. Going on an active holiday without proper activities cover leaves travellers vulnerable to high overseas medical bills. So it really should be a no-brainer, before deciding on a policy, to check that all relevant activities are covered“.

LiVe Well Lanes Visited 8 Million Times Since Opening in Utah Grocery Stores

Partnership helping Utahns live healthier lives

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, USA, July 20, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — LiVe Well Lanes have exceeded 8 million visits in their first three months. LiVe Well Lanes are located at Associated Foods Stores retailers throughout Utah and contain healthy options for quick snacks.

The LiVe Well checkout lanes were created in January 2017 as a partnership between Intermountain Healthcare, Associated Food Stores, the Utah Department of Health and Utah’s local health departments. The lanes are in 43 Associated Food Stores locations, which includes Macey’s, Dan’s, Dick’s Market, and Fresh Market.

"The LiVe Well Lane allows you to choose a snack that offers a nutritional benefit," says Joy Musselman, a dietitian and clinical nutrition manager at Intermountain. "Items offered include fruits, vegetables, nuts, calcium-rich dairy, and whole grains — all foods we typically don't get enough of in our diets. Using the LiVe Well Lane, you can easily choose a snack that will help fulfill something that might be deficient in your diet."

The LiVe Well Lanes have one specific area among the checkout lines in the stores. Shoppers chose the LiVe Well Lanes 25 percent of the time. Healthy items sales have increased 49 percent during the first three months, which translated into about 60,000 healthy items sold.

"We're thrilled with the early results as we work together to make it easier for customers to find healthier choices for their families," says Neal Berube, CEO of Associated Food Stores and a member of Intermountain's Board of Trustees. "Associated Food Stores appreciates the opportunity to participate with Intermountain Healthcare in serving the community. As we take this journey we understand people are seeking better options in meeting their nutrition and fitness goals."

“These numbers reflect that both consumers and retailers benefit from the convenience of healthier options in checkout lanes,” says Jess Church, public health dietitian at Utah Department of Health. “We’re really proud of cross-sector partnerships like this one that make Utahns’ health a priority in our communities.”

The growth will likely continue as additional stores have the opportunity to initiate the program.

Intermountain Healthcare is a Utah-based, not-for-profit system of 22 hospitals, 185 clinics, a Medical Group with some 1,500 employed physicians, a health plans division called SelectHealth, and other health services. Helping people live the healthiest lives possible, Intermountain is widely recognized as a leader in clinical quality improvement and in efficient healthcare delivery.

The mission of the Utah Department of Health is to protect the public's health through preventing avoidable illness, injury, disability and premature death, assuring access to affordable, quality health care, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Nebraska Mesothelioma Victims Center Now Urges a Construction Worker in Nebraska with Mesothelioma to Call Them About the Lawyers They Will Need for Better Compensation Results

Not only do the mesothelioma attorneys we suggest get the best financial compensation for their clients-they also make house calls and theres no charge for their services unless there is a settlement”

— Nebraska Mesothelioma Victims Center

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, July 20, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Nebraska Mesothelioma Victims Center is now urging a construction or skilled trades worker in Nebraska who has just been diagnosed with mesothelioma to call them at 800-714-0303 for very honest advice about why it is incredibly vital they hire one of the nation's most skilled and experienced mesothelioma attorneys as opposed to a local car accident lawyer or a personal injury law firm.

Mesothelioma compensation claims are complex and the last thing a diagnosed person such as a construction worker, an electrician, plumber, welder or Navy Veteran needs is a part time mesothelioma attorney or a local attorney who has little or absolutely no experience dealing with a mesothelioma compensation claim or claims as the Center would like to discuss-anytime. http://Nebraska.MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

The Nebraska Mesothelioma Victims Center says, "The mesothelioma attorneys we suggest are experts when it comes to exactly how or where a construction worker, a welder, an electrician, a plumber or any type of skilled tradesmen could have been exposed to asbestos and they know who made the types of products, materials or equipment that contained asbestos. As we would like to explain anytime at 800-714-0303 it is this specific type of knowledge that makes an attorneys skill and experience so valuable to a person with this rare cancer and their financial compensation.

"If we had one vital hiring an attorney tip for a construction worker, a skilled tradesman, a Navy Veteran or person with mesothelioma in Nebraska it would be please call us at 800-714-0303 and let’s talk about specific attorneys they should be talking to. Not only do the national caliber mesothelioma attorneys we suggest get the best possible financial compensation for their clients-they also make house calls and there is no charge for their services unless there is a settlement. When we say the attorneys-we suggest get better financial compensation for their mesothelioma clients' we are talking about tens of thousands of dollars or hundreds of thousands of dollars-or more." http://Nebraska.MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

The Nebraska Mesothelioma Victims Center’s services are available throughout the state of Nebraska including communities such as Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, Grand Island, Kearney, Fremont, or North Platte.

For the best possible mesothelioma treatment options in Nebraska the Nebraska Mesothelioma Victims Center strongly recommends the following three heath care facilities with the offer to help a diagnosed victim, or their family get to the right physicians at each hospital.

* Creighton University Medical Center Omaha, Nebraska: http://www.creighton.edu/CancerCenter/
* University of Nebraska Medical Center Eppley Cancer Center Omaha, Nebraska: http://www.unmc.edu/cancercenter/

Individuals in the state of Nebraska with mesothelioma could have been exposed to asbestos while serving in the US Navy or while working at a power plant, as a plumber, a boiler technician, as an auto repairman, as an electrician, or in the construction industry. In most cases, the exposure to asbestos took place in the 1950′s, 1960′s, 1970′s, or 1980′s. Mesothelioma typically takes three to five decades to develop. http://Nebraska.MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

The states with the highest incidence of mesothelioma include Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey, West Virginia, Florida, Wyoming, and Washington. However, mesothelioma does happen in Nebraska as the Nebraska Mesothelioma Victims Center would like to explain anytime at 800-714-0303.

For more information about mesothelioma please refer to the National Institutes of Health’s web site related to this rare form of cancer: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/mesothelioma.html
